What do you get when you combine the sounds of Afrobeat, sprinkle in a little jazz and add some electronica for f;avor. You get the group known as Nomo. The Ann Arbor Michigan based has made quite a name for itself for it's spirited multi-instrumental grooves. Their album "Nu-tones" put them on the map. "Ghost Rock", released in 2008 took them to another level. They're now set to release their third record "Invisible Cities". Warren Defever, shown left and the band perform at the World Cafe in Philadelphia.

Is it true? Can we really look forward to a new Omar record? Is he headlining a show with Teedra Moses? Yes and Yes. The UK soul man and the southern soul girl, together at SOB's in NY is an event you don't want to miss. While Omar gets ready to drop a new record, Teedra's follow up to her debut "Complex Simplicity" is still up in the air. In the meantime, check out her mixtape to hold you over before it drops.

We are so happy to have a new release from Lisa Shaw. House heads are very familiar with her work on the Naked music label, specifically the group Blue Six. Her latest project "Free" is the follow up to her debut "Cherry" and her first on Salted records. I recently had to chance to sit down with Lisa to discuss her departure from Naked music and the buzz surrounding "Free". Check it out here.

New music from Daru and Rena
|
Daru is truly one of the hardest working men in the business today. In 2007 he along with Reggie B dropped the underappreciated "Future Music". In addition, Daru and Rena (his sister) dropped a project called "Feel The Love". Daru's superb drumming and production skills combined with Rena's beautiful voice created some quality music. They plan to provide more of that in 09 with the soon to be released "Daru & Rena Luv EP". In the meantime, check out this hot track "I Luv You".

John Robinson, that's who! JR did his his thing at Revive Da Live last week. Hip-Hop 1942 was sick! Too often the relationship between jazz and hip-hop has been an arkward affair but this night was a demonstration that the collaboration can work with great success. It doesn't hurt when you have musicians like pianist Marc Cary, drummer Louis Cato, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, the multi-talented Casey Benjamin (Heavy) on tenor sax just to name a few. In addition, rappers John Robinson, Raydar Ellis and Phonte (Little Brother) made this night very special. Revive Da Live will be hosting future events and we will post them as soon as they become available. Click here for more photos. BTW..."Who Is That Man" is John Robinson's latest cd and it features production from MF Doom. Yes, you need to go get it, now.

Soil & "Pimp" Sessions are fervently rising from the club scenes of Tokyo, London, and Paris with their first US release, "Planet Pimp" on Koch Records, February 24th.
Soil & "Pimp" Sessions are a raucous live band with a punk energy, jazz instrumentals and a smattering of gold chains. Although they have created the Death Jazz genre, they are considered a pop group in their native Japan, where they play for thousands and receive maximum air play for their videos. Their attitude is ferocious and full of humor; the music charges ahead with abandon: rhythmic, danceable, driven by powerhouse grooves, kinetic piano, and bold horns.
They were then brought to the UK and Europe with much love by Gilles Peterson. Giant Step presented their sole US gig in 2007 and it is still one of the most talked about Giant Step events in the past decade.

You know Joi, aka Tennessee Slim is that chick, that bad ass chick from the ATL who knows how to bring the funk. When Joi was in NYC last year she only performed a handful of her songs because she was part of a big line-up as part of the Queens Daughters event. This time around she sung all her hot joints, especially the crowd favorite “Lick”. Maybe it was her birthday that had her so inspired. Actually, that’s just how she gets down. Joi and the dungeon family heated things up and rocked Webster Hall on this cold January night and despite performing well into the wee hours of the night, we just couldn’t get enough.

Roela LaMazing choreographed this superb dance number that featured dancers from Broadway’s The Lion King, visuals provided by Lady Firefly. Seattle native and Harlem resident Kimberly Nicole provided the vocals. Keep an eye on this girl folks, she truly has a big time voice, as well as an ep coming soon.
