Incognito - Bees + Things + FlowersIncognito has been making
soulful acid jazz for over twenty five years. On their twelfth cd,
they've taken something old, something borrowed and something new. In
return, they've stripped down all the songs and added an acoustic
flavor to them. Let's start with the Roy Ayers classic "Everybody Loves
the Sunshine". Not much tinkering here, all you need to do is add the
outstanding voice of Maysa to breathe new life into this great song. As
great as Maysa sounds here, she even outshines herself on the EWF
classic "That's the Way of the World". I'm not a big fan of remakes,
especially when it's a song sung by the incomparable Philip Bailey but
Maysa does it justice, rest assured. Another member of the Incognito
family is the totally slept on Carleen Anderson. She puts her stamp on
classic's like "Summer in the City" and "Tin Man". Favorites like
"Still a Friend of Mine" and their biggest hit "Deep Waters" also
receive a makeover. Another vocalist to keep your eye on is Imaani.
Her work on the song "Everyday" is pure magic. This is a nice change of
pace and a bold move for Bluey and the gang. Instead of resting on
their laurels, they have chosen to push the boundaries just a little
bit. The results are rewarding and refreshing.
