Sy Smith - The Syberspace Social
The sweet vocals of Sy Smith have appeared on many artists records in recent years. Just to name a few, she has sung background for Whitney Houston, Macy Gray and Meshell Ndegeocello. In addition, she's provided lead vocals on the Brand New Heavies 2003 release, "We Won't stop". Now her second solo project, "The Syberspace Social", has been re-released, thanks to the addition of three additional tracks. With the help of producers Nicolay, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and James Poyser, Sy has delivered a nice collection of Futuristic soul with a touch of Psychedelic Funk. That's apparent just from the intro "Welcome 2 Syberspace" and to the following track "Fa Sho". The latter, produced by Ali Shaheed has a unique and very funky beat. Producer Nicolay provides the hypnotic beat on "Aquarian Rising". Ali Shaheed works his magic again on the track "Honey child" (I'm your bumble bee but I don't sting) where Sy integrates her voice with the synthesizer to convey to her mate just what a tasty treat she will be for him. The highlight is the track "Turnstyles". A smooth mid-tempo beat, Sy sings about wanting to be with her baby and whatever it takes to reach him (I'll get on my feet and run for miles, I'll go underground and hop turnstyles). This cd is very synth heavy and is a reflection of the space Sy is in right now. Not to mention the influences of the funk bands like Cameo and Funkadelic. You may not get it at first but after a good listen you will definitely enjoy it.
